"A Day At The Beach"

11 x 14
oil on stretched canvas

I painted this beach scene that was fashioned after a similar painting by deceased Dallas artist Helen Cuthbertson. I know very little about Helen or her work except that my daughter in law and her twin sister collect her paintings. I was fortunate to find this one at an estate sale and was thrilled to have found it a few weeks before my daughter in law's birthday which was today. Ever gotten a gift for someone else and really wanted to keep it for yourself? Well, that happened to me with this painting, but did the right thing and gave it away, but not before painting a smaller version for myself. The framed original was painted on a 16 x 20 canvas. Now we'll both be happy with our new works of art!

  2. I hadn't heard of Helen Cuthbertson either, Ann, but if she paints like this then I can see why your daughter-in-law loves her work. I have been slowly trying to collect pieces from my artist friends in the blog world. That is my ultimate goal in my collecting, with an occasional piece I buy just because I love it and the price is right. Alas, with only one income, my buying will slow to a trickle, but I still have that goal. Your work is among my most favorite and this is a beautiful example of why.

  3. Beautiful, Ann! I'm sure your daughter-in-law loved her gift and wonderful that you made a gift to yourself. I'm going to look Helen Cuthbertson on the internet and hope to find more of her work to see.

  8. Ann, I just posted about my Helen Cuthbertson painting find on my blog. It is 10x19 inches. It is by far my favorite painting that I have acquired in a long time. Lucky you to have the talent to paint your own Galveston! I am going to browse around your blog! ~Tracy

  9. We bought two Helen Cuthbertson paintings at an estate sale near Nashville,TN today. According to a letter attached to one of the paintings (dated 1982) these were friends of Ms. Cuthbertson from Texas. Evidently they had moved in with their daughter here after getting sick. Love the paintings - would like to know more about the artist.

    1. So interesting, thanks for sharing this bit of news, the most that I have heard about Helen or what ever happened to her. At least your letter gives us a date in the '80's and nice to know that she ended up in Tn.
