"A Day At The Beach"

I painted this beach scene that was fashioned after a similar painting by deceased Dallas artist Helen Cuthbertson. I know very little about Helen or her work except that my daughter in law and her twin sister collect her paintings. I was fortunate to find this one at an estate sale and was thrilled to have found it a few weeks before my daughter in law's birthday which was today. Ever gotten a gift for someone else and really wanted to keep it for yourself? Well, that happened to me with this painting, but did the right thing and gave it away, but not before painting a smaller version for myself. The framed original was painted on a 16 x 20 canvas. Now we'll both be happy with our new works of art!

Actually planned to photograph a sequence of this painting but only managed to get the original set up and block in (both included). Somehow I got so involved in the process, I forgot to stop and take  more photos...but you get the idea. Love these hand painted tiles from Holland, they were a "find" at one of my estate sale jaunts, but haven't installed them yet...someday they will find a permanent home!

Here's the finished golfer that I posted last week in the beginning stages. The first post showed the block in, and using only a combination of burnt siena/ultramarine blue the value ranges were laid out. I usually paint in the alla prima style but worked on this for several days. What fun to finally add the color!

Haven't posted anything recently, but have been painting. Thought I would show what's on the easel now in the "sketch" stage. Painted on a 20 x 24 which is a little larger than what I've been doing lately, mainly because of my small studio area. Looks like I'm creeping out into the living area of the house!

"Estes Park Stanley Hotel"

If you've ever been to the town of Estes Park, Colorado, you are certainly aware of the Stanley Hotel where Stephen King's movie The Shining was filmed. The first time we drove into the area, we saw traffic backed up, with cars pulled off the road, only to witness the most beautiful elk standing on a hill right in the middle of town with the Stanley in the background. Hollywood couldn't have produced a more beautiful site!

"Watermelon Reflections"

Carol Marine continues to come up with great exercises for the DPW weekly challenge! This was a photograph that was presented upside down. By painting in this manner, one focuses more on shapes, values and colors rather than a certain object. This was especially challenging with all the reflections and then the reflections of reflections, do you see all that? It's always a pleasant surprise when you finish and finally flip the painting right side up! Try it, it works!

A couple of young guys at a local rodeo, dreaming of the day that they will be ridin' and ropin'. Loved painting these young boys, makes me think of our two sons...how quickly they grow up!

Painted on the last day of the OPS paint out in Fredericksburg.  We had the most perfect location with these incredible views at the Tonkawaya Ranch, noted for being the highest point in Gillespie County. Would love to go back and spend a week there taking in the most breathtaking scenery, and that doesn't even take into consideration the fifteen longhorns grazing throughout the hills. What a true Texas experience! The Howard's were extremely generous in opening up their property for the artists. The is a view facing west, can you just imagine what the sunsets must look like!!!

Angela and I were out painting en plein air one day when her daughter stopped by the park with their dog Cowgirl. How Texas is that! Couldn't resist snapping a few photos of this precious pup, which resulted in my moleskin entry for Angela's book.

DailyPaintworks challenge this week is Paint Your Vegetables, a subject that I love to include in most any still life. A trip to the produce aisle in the grocery store conjures up all sorts of painting ideas. After a few days of plein air, this was a fun project for a rainy day!

This past week Outdoor Painters Society had a paint out in and around Fredericksburg, Texas. This was painted on my first day, just down the road from Luckenbach. On driving through the small community of Luckenbach (by small, I mean post office, general store, beer stands and lots of picnic tables), we encountered a good number of bikers preparing for a rally over the weekend, but, sorry, no sightings of Willie and Waylon!

Normally don't do self portraits, but that's the Daily Paintworks challenge this week, so tackled this from a photo my husband took of me painting en plein air. Remember when we were younger and talked of older people as "blue hairs"...OMG, I looked at this painting and realized that I R 1 !!!!

A couple of years ago on vacation my husband and I stopped at this cafe in Rome and enjoyed lunch under the umbrellas on the left, unaffected by the afternoon showers. The rain stopped just as we finished eating and when we left the cafe I turned around to take the above photograph. Great memories!

Carol Marine of The Daily Paintworks has a "chicken challenge" for this week, which gave me the chance to paint these guys that I photographed about a year ago in Monteagle, Tennessee. We stopped by a local flea market and there was everything from toys, farm equipment, typical garage sale items, locally produced honey, horses and lots of smaller animals in cages. We are going back this year and hope to be there again on market day!

The Texas Moleskin Round Up blog features some interesting paintings with varied themes. I think Jean Townsend's moleskin wins the prize for the most unusual topic for her book and that is detritus (noun, meaning rubbish, scrap, or junk) These clay pots in my backyard have been "rescued" from the trash making someone else's junk my treasure! Randy Higbee 6" Squared Entry "Country Road"

I'm pleased to report that this painting was juried into the Randy Higbee 6" Squared Show opening in Costa Mesa, Ca. April 16th through May 6th. With over 1200 entries, only about 1/3 were chosen for the show so I feel especially honored to be among that group. This was painted from a plein air study I did in East Texas about a month ago.  

"Play Ball" for the Help Japan Challenge

March 11 marked the beginning of the devastation in Japan with the earthquake, following tsunamis and now the nuclear crisis. The Daily Paintworks website has found a way to help this stricken country. Artists worldwide are donating paintings to be auctioned off with all proceeds of the sold piece going to a charity of your choice that will benefit the Japanese people. Several charitable organizations are listed on the DPW webpage. The theme for this challenge is "home" and I can't help but think of all the children affected by this catastrophe with their loss of homes, schools and time to play and just be kids. After only a few days, over nine thousand dollars has already been raised, and with weeks to go, I expect that number to be much higher. I hope you will click on the above link and see all the wonderful art and consider helping in this much needed cause. I have chosen to let the buyer of "Play Ball" donate their winning bid amount to a charity of their own choice and upon documentation of their donation, I will cover all shipping costs and send the painting to them. Jerry Hunsinger is a wonderful artist living in Howe, Texas, about an hour north of Dallas. I had the pleasure of taking a Saturday morning class in her backyard studio this past weekend. What a treat to watch Jerry's demo followed by a painting session in her studio. Some of the class painted from photos while I chose to paint this beautiful copper pot from many of Jerry's collectibles. Be sure to check out her website and enjoy her artwork, especially the portraits. Saw one of her pet portraits that I hoped would follow me home, but unfortunately it didn't! Will look forward to future classes with Jerry, maybe plein air next time if anyone in the Dallas area wants to join us!

Today I joined two artists, Angela Elledge and Ron Sullivan, for a day of plein air in their Spring Park neighborhood. Winding through the green spaces are beautiful creeks, ponds, and lots of trees ready to bud out with Spring fast approaching. Still lots to learn painting in plein air but am beginning to be more comfortable with the set up and surroundings.

The Daily Paintworks Challenge this week was Raymond Logan's idea, paint a portrait of Lincoln from his photograph using just three colors: ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and titanium white. Limited palette but great for considering the correct values. It's fun to see all the submissions, check out the above link!

Wanted to get in some plein air painting time the other day, but oh, the wind was out of control. So settled on a view from my patio which was sheltered from the gusty day. Liked how the sunlight on these pots was filtered through the trees.

This is my entry to this week's challenge by Carol Marine of the Daily Paintworks. It was an exercise of painting one bush stroke with one color, then repeat...second brush stroke, another color. You get the idea. It is meant to loosen up your composition, eliminating too much detail and overworking of the subject...stopping one's habit of "messing" with the paint on the canvas and over mixing your colors. The first of March begins a new project for a number of Texas artists. The Texas Moleskin Round Up is officially under way! A group of us have purchased our personal moleskin book and started this project with painting in our journal, and now it's time to send it off to the next artist to enter her preferred work. At the end of this "round robin" we should each have our own book back with artwork from everyone else in the group. Am sure it will be a fun project and a real treasure to have at the end of the book's journey. Check our new website occasionally to see how we are progressing, and thanks for following along!

One of the problems most artists have is knowing when to just stop, and realizing that a painting is finished. Some of us tend to keep "messing" with it and end up overworking the detail. Didn't have that problem with this one. A cold front started moving in about mid way through this and the wind kept getting stronger and stronger, when one last gust blew easel and everything over. Okay, painting is finished at that point! 

Thanks to my thoughtful husband for suggesting a weekend trip to East Texas for some plein air painting for me and some photography for him. This was painted just north of Paris, Texas.
